All Rights Stem from Individual Rights! Period The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009 (H.R. 1913) is yet another way to stifle the free speech and expression of a free people. If you break it down, what is the difference between a hate crime (harm to a person of select minority) and the same crime against anyone else? A "special" law is not needed to keep it straight. And if there were a "special" law to protect a certain "protected class" of citizen, can there be equal protection under the law? If you are not in the "selected groups" covered under the "hate crime" bill, then aren't you being treated differently? The Fantasy: We need a special law to protect people from crimes or threats because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious belief, sexual orientation, or disability. And we all know that if we have another rule these "special" people will be protected from harm. The Reality: Assault is assault! Battery is battery! Murder is murder! A "special" law is not needed to keep it straight! Nor is there equal protection under the law if this is passed is there? If you are not in the "selected groups" covered under the "hate crime" bill, then aren't you being treated differently? And just as importantly, this is an attack on religious freedom if you are ones who might oppose the views of those this bill seeks to protect. Again, skewed is the equal protection under the law here. The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009 (H.R. 1913) is also known as the Matthew Shepard Act. It is so named for the gay college student who was kidnapped, robbed, beaten and left to die in 1998 by two vicious thugs. Would it have been a different crime or different outcome if Shepard had not been gay? If so, why? We don't need another meaningless law! Let's enforce the laws we have. And, we already have laws to protect all of us from civil rights offenses and criminal acts against us. Stand up! Make the calls or send the emails to you U.S. Representative TUESDAY and tell them to vote NO ln H.R. 1913!! This is a threat about which Dr. Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries have warned for years. We are asking you to please call or email your representative now to voice opposition to the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009 (H.R. 1913). Don’t know the name of your House member? Here’s a quick, easy, way to find and write to your representative: Contact My Representative! The proposed hate crimes legislation is so dangerous because it threatens our First Amendment right to free speech. Hate crimes laws have already been used in Britain, Sweden, Australia, and Canada, to assault the free speech rights of Christians. The law now before Congress will place pastors or anyone else who speaks out against homosexual conduct at risk of federal prosecution. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), a former judge, said that under this bill, clergymen and others could be charged with encouraging or inducing a "hate crime" if they preach against homosexuality. To learn more, watch this six-minute Coral Ridge Hour video and then call your House member. With your help and that of thousands of others, we can defeat the hate crimes legislation under consideration in Congress. A vote in the full House is expected later this spring. Please make your voice heard now by calling or emailing your House representative. For contact information, go to Contact My Representative!
